The Latinx Studies Section (LSS) of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) announces its 2023 Awards and invites nominations and submissions for the following awards.

Submit to one of LASA Latinx Sections awards this year. Each comes with a prize of $500. Categories are best book, best article, and best dissertation!

Please send material as soon as possible. The final deadline for submission for all the awards is February 24, 2023. Award winners will be announced March 31, 2023.

1-LASA-Latinx Section Outstanding Book Award - $500

The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Latinx Studies Section (LSS) Outstanding Book Award is presented to a single-authored book that reflects original research in the area of Latinx Studies. Books awarded this distinction are recognized as being situated within the US Latinx field designation, that is, as making a significant contribution to disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge addressing Latinx populations in the United States, as well as their cultural productions and methodologies. Section members and publishers may nominate books for the prize. Self-nominations are welcomed. Young scholars and first-book authors are highly encouraged to submit their books.

Translations, reprints, re-editions of previously published works, edited volumes, multi-author collections of essays, or books previously nominated for this award are not eligible for this award.

Nominations should include the name of author, title of book, date of publication, publisher, and a brief 1-page description of the book’s merits and its contribution to the field of Latinx Studies. In addition, a copy of the book must be mailed to each committee member, including the committee chair (contact the committee chair for names and mailing addresses). Books eligible for the 2023 LSS Outstanding Latinx Studies Book Award must have a copyright date of 2022, but it is acceptable to send manuscripts in process that will meet this criterion in galley or comparable format. Nominated books must be received by each committee member no later than February 24, 2023.

2-LASA Latinx Studies Section Dissertation Award - $500

The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Latinx Studies Section (LSS) Outstanding Dissertation Award is given for the best doctoral dissertation that focuses on Latinx communities, issues, and topics. The work may be grounded in any disciplinary or interdisciplinary field. The competition is open to Ph.D.'s from institutions in the United States, Latin America, Canada and the Caribbean who deposited their dissertation between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022.

Nominations should include a letter of support from the chair or other member of the dissertation committee that addresses the contribution of the dissertation to the field of Latinx Studies by February 24, 2023 to Maria Puerta Riera, Chair of the LASA-Latinx Studies Section Dissertation Award Committee at mpuertariera@valenciacollege.edu.

3-Latinx Studies Section Outstanding Article Award in Latinx Studies - $500

The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Latinx Studies Section (LSS) Outstanding Article Award is presented to a peer-reviewed journal article or book chapter from an edited volume that reflects original research in the area of Latinx Studies, especially work that focuses on Latinx communities, issues, and topics. The article may be grounded in any disciplinary or interdisciplinary field.

Section members can nominate articles for the prize. Self-nominations are also welcomed. In nominating an article for the award, please include a brief comment on the manuscript’s merits and its contribution to the field.

For 2023, the award will go to the best article published between August 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022.
