1. Governance of the section.

As it happened in the previous year the Section’s direction was composed by an “Executive Board” for the section, where all elected members play an active role in the decision-making process of the section.

The 2021-2022 Executive Board is composed by:

2. Lasa Congress 2022

2.1 Sponsored panels 2022

For the LASA2022 ‘Polarización socioambiental y rivalidad entre grandes potencias´ we sponsored 4 panels:

• Los cuerpos femeninos como territorios: dispositivos estratégicos de biopoder desde el marco de las instituciones antes y después de la pandemia del COVID-19
• Violencia de genero y universidad: enfrentando desafíos
• Desigualdades y resistencias de colectivos subalternos en pandemia desde una mirada interseccional
• Desarrollo no sustentable, genero, etnicidad y pandemia: perspectivas a traves de America Latina.

The Board suggested to the rest of the panels that were not selected, to submit the proposals to the Tracks.

2.2 Intersectional Panel

For the LASA2022 ‘Polarización socioambiental y rivalidad entre grandes potencias´, we organized an intersectional panel called “Diálogos Interdisciplinarios: identidades, territorios, y transformaciones sociales”. This panel was co-organized with Latino Studies section, Central America section and International Migrations section.

‘Elsa Chaney: granted to “María José Pérez Sián (Universidad de Texas en Austin) for her article “Desplazamiento forzado de mujeres mayas poqomchi’ durante la guerra: relaciones entre la violencia contrasubversiva y la violencia estructurada en Guatemala, 1982-1988".

‘Mariele Franco’: granted to María Alejandra Aguilar Dornelles (Florida Atlantic University) for her article “En nombre de la madre: el valor político del heroísmo en la narrativa de Maria Firmina dos Reis”.

Unfortunately, there was not valid submission for the ‘Helen Safa´ Award requirements.

The Juri for the Awards was constituted by: Edme Dominguez (University of Gothenburg), Ana Laura Rodriguez-Gustá (Universidad Nacional de San Martin) and Liliana Castañeda Rentería (Universidad de Guadalajara).

The Board thanks them for their wonderful job.

4. Meetings 

Both co-chairs (Maria Azocar and Castriela Hernandez) attended the co-chairs assembly with the Executive Committee on October 6, 2022 and the co-chairs assembly on April 6, 2022.

Both co-chairs (Maria Azocar and Castriela Hernandez) attended the Chair Meeting during the LASA on-line conference via Zoom on May 5.

5. Business meeting 2022

The Business Meeting of the Gender and Feminist Studies of the Latin American Studies Association was held virtually, May 6, at 6pm PT. About 13 members of the section were present. The meeting was coordinated by Maria José Azocar and Castriela Hernandez, and the members of the Board were present: Elizabeth Corredor, Lidia Possas, and Nora Nagels.

In the meeting we shared with the participants the activities that were carried out by the Section during the year 2021/2022 and we held the election for the new board.

6. Others

• En Agosto del año 2021, y en un trabajo conjunto con la sección de América Central enviamos una carta al Comité Ejecutivo firmada por otras 36 secciones para re-considerar los costos del Congreso (que en ese momento iba a ser presencial), pidiendo re-considerar el sistema “pay what you can”.
• En Noviembre del año 2022, enviamos una carta firmada por otras 18 secciones al Comité Ejecutivo para 1. Pedir una disculpa pública a nuestra compañera Castriela Hernandez por los dichos racistas de Margarita Lopez durante la reunion de co-chairs realizada el 6 de Octubre del año 2021; 2. Implementar un comité anti-discriminación.

The Business Meeting of the Gender and Feminist Studies of the Latin American Studies Association was held virtually, May 27, from 07:00pm to 09:45pm EDT. About 13 members of the section were present, and it was a very pleasant moment for community building. The meeting was coordinated by the co-chair Maria José Azocar, and the members of the Board were present: Elizabeth Corredor Maria González-Malabet and Castriela Hernandez Reyes. In the meeting we shared with the participants the activities that were carried out by the Section during the year 2020/2021

Activities in 2020/2021:

1. Governance of the section.

The Board is now integrated by the co-chairs (2), a secretary and a treasurer; and Social Media representatives.

2. Organization of the Pre-conference

For the the LASA2021 ‘Crisis Global Desigualdade y centralidade de la vida’, we organized a pre-conference called “Protesta social en Colombia. The panels were composed of Colombian academics who talked about: ‘The protest genesis’, ‘The response of the State’, ‘The different forms of activism and artistic expressions that have emerged during these weeks’, ‘Gender dynamics and sexuality of protests’ and ‘The regional implication’. Pascha Bueno-Hansen (University of Delaware) and Barbara Sutton (University al Albany) led the event. About 50 people attended the pre-conference.

3. Awards

A special group to revaluate the scope and the rules to the section Awards was created. En el grupo participó: Alejandra Aguilar, Liliana Castañeda, and Edme Dominguez.

The Board started the CFP for the Elsa Chaney, Helen Safa and Marielle Franco Section’s Awards in October. 11 papers were submitted for the call.

‘Helen Safa’: granted to Women, politics and gender in Argentine football clubs. An ethnographic approach to the gender area of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata by Julia Hang.

‘Mariele Franco’: Cuerpo, mestizaje y colonialidad la alteridad de las mujeres trans en las muestras fotográficas Padre Patria y Vírgenes de la Puerta, by Rocío del Águila Gracey.

Unfortunately, there was not valid submission for the ‘Elsa Chaney’ Award requirements.

4. Joint Section

Together with the International Migration Section, the joint session ‘Linking a gender and migration perspective in the study of the unequal impacts of COVID-19 on the vulnerable and their agency’.

5. Chair meeting

Both co-chairs (Thais França and Maria Azocar) attended the Chair Meeting during the LASA on-line conference via Zoom. This meeting was very important, as the Executive Board informed chairs of some changes that will be implemented in the LASA Governance Structure. This process has been in place since last year. A selection commission to the Sections’ representatives in LASA’s executive board was created. Our chair Thais França will join the commission. In this meeting, more explanations were offer about the editorial LARC.

6. Business meeting

El día 27 de Mayo se realizó la Business Meeting de la sección en la que participaron 13 personas. Se hizo un repaso de las actividades realizadas el año 2020 y 2021, y además se recogieron sugerencias de las personas que atendieron el evento. Entre otras cosas se discutió:

• Considerando que muy pocas personas asistieron a la reunión, se sugirió tener una próxima reunión abierta a toda la sección para el día 10 de Junio a las 10am PT y así invitar a más personas a participar y sugerir ideas para el próximo año.

• Lidia Possas sugirió crear más canales de diálogo y colaboración entre las personas de las sección.

• Se comentó que el congreso virtual entregó una valiosa oportunidad de participación a personas de América Latina (por su bajo costo y facilidad de acceso) y que recomendó considerar el formato híbrido para el congreso de 2022.

• Marianne Merchand propuso liderar una reunión para entregar mayores consejos sobre cómo publicar en revistas.

The section’s business meeting took place during the LASA on-line conference via Zoom, in total we had 13 to attendants. During the meeting we presented the initiatives we had developed during the year 2020-2021

7. Elections

8. Others

Additionally, the section organized extra activities:

• On March 8th, the board presented a media campaign based on pictures rejecting gender violence, sexism, and racism. The pictures were displayed on our Twitter profile and Facebook.

• The section was organized a homage section to our member ‘Monica Trujillo’ who was a victim of Covid-19. The event was held on the 10th of December 2020 and it was a moment to discuss the gendered implications of the pandemic.

• The section holds an active Facebook and twitter profile with 275 and 1001 followers respectively.

• A presentation video of the section was produced, in which the board introduces the section and invites people to join it. The video is available in our FB and Twitter profile

• An ‘online writing group’ has been conducted by the Section, on Wednesdays at 9.00 am EDT+1. The group has been led by Elizabeth Corredor and has an average of 8 participants per meeting.

The Business Meeting of the Gender and Feminist Studies of the Latin American Studies Association was held virtually, May 14, from 11:00 to 12:45 7:15. About 25 members of the section were present, and it was a very pleasant moment for community building. The meeting was coordinated by the co-chairs Thais França and Beatriz Padilla, and all members of the Board were present: Maria Azócar (Secretary), Elizabeth Corridor (Treasurer), Maria González-Malabet (Social Media) and Mónica Trujillo (Preconference/local Liaison). Due to the logistical issues, no elections were held that day, but there was an open call for people who would like to join the Board for the existing positions. In the following weeks, some people volunteered, so Castriela Reyes will be the new secretary, and Pilar Riaño and Julia Zulver will be the Pre-conference/local liaisons for Vancouver. Maria Azócar, former secretary, will become the co-chair substituing Beatriz Padilla, and Elizabeth Corridor will be Treasurer one more term. (see more bellow).

Activities since Boston 2019:

1. Formalization of the Board.

After the section’s election held during the business meeting, May 25 2019, in the Conference in Boston, the co-chairs and the elected members for the positions of the Section, decided to to formalized the creation of an “Executive Board” for the section, where all elected members play an active role in the decision-making process of the section. For that, also, two new positions were created: Social media, Pre-Conference Liaison. The pre-existing positions were 2 co-chairs, one secretary and one treasurer. With this change, the Board is now integrated by the co-chairs (2), a secretary and a treasurer; Pre-conference/local Liaison and Social Media representative. The Board celebrated its constitutions in the Reception help the following day, May 26.

2. Sponsored panels 2020

For the LASA Conference in Guadalajara, as a section we were eligible to sponsor 4 panels. In 2019, we received a total of 12 proposals. The board selected the following four):

b. In and Beyond Popular Feminisms”: Towards Decolonial and Black Popular Feminisms in Latin America - Coord.: Nathalie Lebon *

c. Violências heteropatriarcal e racial em Améfrica Ladina: Reproduções e Resistências - Coord.: Mariana Prandini Assis and Cecília MacDowell Santos *

d. New Sites for Challenging Gender Exclusion and Violence - Coord.: Victoria Sanford

The Board suggested to the rest of the panels that were not selected, to submit the proposals to the Tracks.

Due to the fact that the Conference was held virtually, it was up to the panels to participate or not. As a consequence, 2 of the selected panels were carried out (*) and 2 others were postponed for 2021.

3. Organization of the Pre-conference

For the LASA Congress in Guadalajara, we organized a pre-conference called “Saberes de Mujeres Indígenas” in partnership with the Red de Promotoras de la mujer indígena en Jalisco (PRODEMI, an indigenous women cooperative. The Pre-conference aimed at being a space where local women could share their experience and their knowledge with our members. Workshops were going to be delivered by indigenous women. The program is attached. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, the event had to be cancelled.

4. Award

The Board started the CFP for the Elsa Chaney, Helen Safa and Marielle Franco Section’s Awards in November, so earlier than in previous years, however, the number of articles received was lower than usual. Five papers were submitted for the call. The Helen Safa Award was granted to Carolina Arango for her paper on “When Sisterhood is at Stake: The case of a Colombian feminist NGO in times of global neoliberalism” and the Elsa Chaney Award was given to Annie Wilkinson for her paper entitled “The Death Threat of Gender: Security Culture and Transnational Pro-Family Activism in Mexico”. Unfortunately, there was not valid submission for the Marielle Franco Award requirements.

The Juri for the Elsa Chaney and Marielle Franco Awards was constituted by: Juliana Restrepo Sanin, Elizabeth Corredor, Edmé Dominguez Reyes. The Board thanks them for their wonderful job.

5. Joint Section

Together with the Otros Saberes Section, a joint Session on Reproductive Justice in Latin America was organized. The join section was held virtually.

6. Chair meeting

Both co-chairs (Thais França and Beatriz Padilla) attended the Chair Meeting during the LASA on-line conference via Zoom. This meeting was very important, as the Executive Board informed chairs of some changes that will be implemented in the LASA Governance Structure. This was a response to the Letter sent by many sections to the President and LASA Executive Board, which the Gender and Feminist Section had also endorsed and promoted. In this meeting, more explanations were offer about Conference Tracks, relations between tracks and sections, etc. Another issue that was presented to the chairs is that the Executive Board will be holding several meetings with the sections chairs throughout the year to promote better communications. LASA informed the chairs that the number of sponsored panels for next LASA will be kept the same (4 for Gender), as there are uncertainties about membership during the pandemic.

7. Business meeting

The section’s business meeting took place during the LASA on-line conference via Zoom, in total we had 22 to attendants. During the meeting we presented the initiatives we had developed during the year, discussed how the elections were going to happen, created two working group, “Award” and “Governance” with the purpose to help the section in improving its award and its relation with LASA. While the Award working group will work in better defining the CFP for the three awards and other necessary adjustments, the Governance Working Group will articulate and promote new ideas to the LASA Executive Committee, including organizing events (webinars) to promote more participation and engagement with the membership in relevant issues/topics. Some people offered some of their spaces to promote discussions and research results from our members (Lidia Passos from Brazil and Maria Gonzalez-Malabet from Colombia).

8. Elections

The election for the new board took place after the business meeting on-line through the section’s mailing list. Thais França started her second year as co-chair and Maria Azocar joint as co-chair. Elizabeth Corredor and Maria Gonzalez-Malabet will maintain their functions as treasurer and social media, respectively, Castriella Reyes will become secretary and Julia Zuler and Pilar Riaño will join as Pre-Conference Liaisons for the Pre-conference in Vancouver.

Thus the new Board is composed as follows:

9. Others

In 2019/2020, the Gender and Feminist Studies section was involved in the Section letter’s to the LASA Executive Committee. Overall the initiative was very positive as for the first time in many years, the Sections are being heard. The main demands relate to increasing participation and consideration of sections opinion by the Executive Board, more visibility, better connections between tracks and sections, reassessment of the cost of fees, among others.

As July 2020, the section has $ 4.886.91 in its account.

La Pre-Conferencia será co-organizada entre:

• Unidad de apoyo a indígenas en la Universidad de Guadalajara, Jalisco, México.

Lugar de la actividad

La actividad se realizará en la comunidad donde cuentan con un espacio.

El lugar se encuentra en el municipio de Zapopan, Jalisco.

Propuesta de actividades:

-Presentación de trabajos ganadores

-Plática donde la comunidad, Cristina Apolonia y Marta Iris no platicarán su experiencia como migrantes a Jalisco y como han gestionado un espacio para su comunidad en Zapopán, Jalisco. Así como de su experiencia como activistas de derechos humanos desde su punto de vista.

-Mujeres de la comunidad impartirán algunos talleres.

-Se ofrecerá comida tradicional preparadas por las integrantes de la Asociación.

Informe Sección de Género y Estudios Feministas de LASA - 2018-2019

La reunión de negocios de la Sección de Género y Estudios feministas se realizó el Miércoles 25 de Mayo, de 5:45 a 7:15 pm en la sala SB Beacon A del Hotel Sheraton, una de las sedes del Congreso LASA 2019. Estuvieron presentes aproximadamente unas 19 miembros de la sección. El encuentro fue coordinado por la co-chair Beatriz Padilla, la segunda co-chair no participó del congreso de LASA y envió su renuncia unas semanas antes del mismo.

En esa oportunidad se trataron los siguientes temas:

- RESUMEN DE LO SUCEDIDO EN LA BUSINESS MEETING DE TODOS/AS LOS/AS CHAIRS DE LAS SECCIONES DE LASA.

Lo más destacado fue:

o La presencia de la presidenta Lynn Stephen quien habló con los jefes de secciones.

o Algunos de los nuevos co-chairs hicieron propuestas para que los costos a los miembros fuera inferior, y para que se tuvieran en cuenta otros criterios para la presentación de paneles.

o Se discutió de los pros y contras de que los próximos LASA se realicen fuera de USA, ya que pueden tener consecuencias en la forma de realizar los pagos de las becas.

o El staff de LASA también presentó sobre la importancia de las redes sociales, y que se deben enviar las informaciones en 4 lenguas, y los costos asociados. La membresía no está muy de acuerdo con esa obligación, especialmente por el uso del francés que no es casi usado ni hay miembros que lo hablen dentro de la sección y que puedan contribuir a la traducción de los textos, como sí existen en las otras tres lenguas.

- PRESENTACIÓN DE LAS ACTIVIDADES REALIZADAS DURANTE EL AÑO 2018/9.

Entre ellas se mencionó:

o Apoyo de la sección al caso de acoso académico a las colegas chilenas y la campaña de recolección de firmas en su apoyo.

o Lanzamiento del nuevo premio de la sección Marielle Franco, específicamente: creación/ definición del premio, criterios, jurado.

o Concurso y atribución de los premios de la sección: Heln Safa, Elsa Chaney y Marielle Franco, con dos jurados.

o Organización de la pre-conferencia en la Northeastern University, la cual contó con la participación de unas 40 personas.

- DISCUSIÓN SOBRE LA IMPORTANCIA DE FORTALECER LA MEMBRESÍA DE LA SECCIÓN

o Este año retomamos el tema de la membresía, lo que fue muy positivo dado que en la reunión participaron miembros antiguos y recién incorporados.

o Las participantes se mostraron favorables a la realización de un evento social (recepción) como evento aglutinador. (Lo que fue verificado en la recepción el día siguiente).

- OTROS ASUNTOS:

o Se habló de la situación de crisis de algunos países de la región y sobre que estrategias implementar para que puedan seguir participando. El Board verá la posibilidad de tener becas u otras formas de apoyos (se mencionó el caso de Venezuela con el tema de la crisis humanitaria e hiperinflación, y también de Argentina donde la inflación es considerable).

o La sección se manifestó a favor de la nueva política anti-acoso de LASA y de como se reforzará como parte de nuestra misión.

- PRE-CONFERENCIA PARA EL PRÓXIMO LASA EN GUADALAJARA

o Se creo un comité informal de ligación para la realización de la próxima conferencia. Se discutió la posibilidad de realizarla en conjunto con la sección Otros Saberes (con quienes mantuvimos una conversación informal), y estamos aguardando una respuesta. La membresía compartió la idea, inclusivamente se habló de poder hacer la preconferencia en un espacio comunitario con organizaciones de mujeres locales, posiblemente en un ambiente rural y con mujeres indígenas. Para ello el comité local será clave para analizar las posibilidades. Muchas manifestaron el interés por que sea una conferencia inserida en trabajo de campo o de intercambio con las organizaciones locales.

- TESORERÍA:

Linda Stevenson, la tesorera, no pudo estar presente, pero se informó que aun existe superávit de la sección. Este año se realizó la recepción, y se creó un nuevo premio (3 en total, $500 dólares cada uno, totalizando $ 1.500). El costo de la recepción fue de $ 3.459.34.

- PATROCINIO DE PANELES.

La sección patrocinó un total de 4 paneles de la sección, sin embargo hubo algunos problemas en la realización de los mismos, especialmente debido a que algunos miembros de los paneles apoyados no se inscribieron ni participaron del evento, u otras situaciones relacionadas con la redistribución de panelistas en otros paneles. Por suerte los problemas fueron solucionados por el staff de LASA.

- PRECONFERENCIA

Fue realizada el 23 de Mayo, de 9:30 a 18 hs en la Northeastern University, gracias a que la Profesora Joseph nos reservó un auditorio. El evento se llamó “En contra del odio: estrategias feministas de sobrevivencia y resistencia”, contó con varias actividades: una mesa redonda sobre Persecusiones académicas: casos actuales o recientes - ¿qué podemos hacer desde LASA y desde nuestra sección frente a persecusión académica o asesio en la actualidad?, con casos de Chile, Brasil, Colombia y Argentina; una presentación de libro con un diálogo con las autoras titulado Violencias Estatales y Persecuciones Académicas del siglo XVI - XXI ; la proyección de un documental sobre Marielle Franco y debate Marielle Franco: um ano de crime sem solução, un panel con la presentación de los trabajos premiados (Marielle Franco y Helen Safa) y una mesa redonda con mujeres representantes de organizaciones de la sociedad civil local, coordinado por una de las miembros locales. Participaron aproximadamente 40 personas, y fue muy participativa. Debido a la importancia del tema, la sección se comprometió a matenerse activa en el tema de la persecución académica y acoso. La sección le agradece a Tiffany Joseph y Kelley Ready por su apoyo. (ver programa abajo)

- RECEPCIÓN:

Durante el congreso de LASA 2019, y tal como decidido en la reunión de negocios en Barcelona, tuvo lugar la recepción. La misma estuvo muy animada y participaron casi 40 personas, fue un ambientes amigable donde las personas hablaron, construyendo vínculos y celebraron en conjunto. Se confirmó que es una buena idea organizar las recepciones.

- ACTIVIDADES PARA EL PRÓXIMO AÑO:

Las propuestas en general consistieron en pensar estrategias más participativas y que atraigan a las más jóvenes, para renovar y dar lugar a las nuevas generaciones. Pensar en nuevas formas de participación y compromiso, intentando mantener más activas y entusiasmadas a las miembros. A nivel del Board, se intentará mejorar el mailing list (depurando la lista y agregando las nuevas integrantes de la sección) pidiendo más ayuda al staff de LASA. 

-ELECCIONES:

Realizamos también las elecciones de representantes. Muchas gracias a las miembros/representantes que dejan sus funciones por su desempeño y tiempo dedicado! Este año optamos por adaptar las elecciones a las necesidades de la sección y creamos el Board, que incluye una persona de liason local con el próximo congreso y una persona de medios y comunicación. Muchas felicidades a las nuevas integrantes de la dirección de la sección!

- PRIMERA REUNION DEL BOARD DE LA SECCIÓN:

El día siguiente a la reunión de la sección, el BOARD mantuvo una reunión en la que se estableció tener una reunión via Skype con frecuencia y para mantener más activa las actividades de la sección.

El informe de Amnistía Internacional de 2017-2018 documenta un aumento en la represión por parte de los gobiernos, y al mismo tiempo un incremento en la inseguridad y crímenes violentos en la región, en particular contra personas LGBTI y los pueblos indígenas, mujeres y niñas. Los inmigrantes continúan a ser criminalizados y, durante los dos últimos años, los líderes latinoamericanos tienden a imitar la retórica y decretos del Presidente Trump. Según el Southern Poverty Law Center, una organización no gubernamental de derechos civiles, localizada en Montgomery, Alabama, el número de grupos de odio en los Estados Unidos ha aumentado un 30% desde 2014, una tendencia opuesta a la verificada los tres años anteriores. El uso de la tecnología en la propagación de crímenes de odio es alarmante, y las respuestas de las empresas y de los gobiernos son insuficientes, o de cómplices. ¿Qué es lo que hacemos en contra del odio? ¿Cómo podemos hacernos más fuertes para superar la tristeza y desesperación de estos malos momentos? El congreso de LASA se realiza en Boston, Massachusetts, que fue escenario de varias revoluciones y movilizaciones trascendentales de mujeres Latinx, afrodescendientes, indígenas, LGBT y coaliciones feministas, a lo largo de la historia. En honor a estas acciones revolucionarias, pretendemos nos preguntamos, ¿hasta qué punto las ideas contemporáneas sobre democracia y justicia son anti-sexistas? ¿Cómo enfrentar los desafíos de las disparidades sociales, económicas, raciales, étnicas, de género, sexuales y de otros tipos en el actual contexto? Como la Sección de Género y Feminismo, queremos hacer esta reflexión de forma conjunta con las comunidades latinoamericana y latina de Boston y alrededores, en la región, estrechando vínculos entre las instituciones académicas, comunitarias y políticas. Desde la perspectiva panamericanista, participativa, comprometida y feminista, la Pre-Conferencia de la Sección Género y Feminismos se orientará principalmente a discutir la temática del acceso a la justicia e inclusión de las mujeres en el ámbito social, político y económico desde un enfoque interseccional.
