Subnational Politics and Society

A Section of the Latin American Studies Association

News & Notes

  • During LASA 2019 the Subnational Politics and Society section sponsored a panel on Violence, crime and insecurity in Latin America from a subnational perspective that was the result of an open call for papers. The participants included: Juan Albarracín (ICESI, Cali); Laura Iesue (University of Miami), Cecilia Farfán (US-Mexico Center, UCSD); Nicholas Barnes (Brown University). The discussant was professor Richard Snyder (Brown University).
  • We received many great proposals for our sponsored panel so the section sponsored a second panel on “Violence, Crime, and inequalities in Latin America” with papers from Daniel Zizumbo (CIDE, Aguascalientes), Giancarlo Visconti (Duke University), and Angélica Durán-Martínez (University of Massachusetts-Lowell). The discussant was Janice Gallagher (Rutgers University, Newark).
  • Congratulations to the winners of the Subnational Politics and Society travel grant for LASA 2019 Laura Iesue (University of Miami) and Tomas Dosek (Universidad Católica de Chile).
  • The Subnational Politics and Society section congratulates section members Eduardo Moncada, Agustina Giraudy, and Richard Snyder for the publication of their edited volume Inside Countries: Subnational Research in Comparative Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Their achievement was highlighted at the business section meeting.
