LASA-México invites submissions and nominations for the following awards:

Best Book in the Humanities
Best Book in Social Sciences
Best Article in the Humanities
Best Article in Social Sciences
Best Dissertation


Books and articles should be published between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. Dissertations must have been submitted to, defended, and accepted by the Graduate School of the author between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024. Authors may compete in as many categories as they fit according to this call for submissions. Authors must be members of LASA and of the LASA Section to compete for any category, except for the Prize for the Best Dissertation (open to members and non-members). The committees will have their decision by March 30, 2024.

Authors and nominators are responsible for:

a) the accuracy of date of the publication/acceptance,

b) the updated paid membership of the authors and their affiliation with Mexico Section (with the exception of the dissertation award), and

c) the handing of the book, article, or dissertation in its required format by the deadline.

Best Book in the Humanities – Mexico Section


The Mexico Section Best Book in the Humanities is given to the best book on Mexico in the Humanities, published in Spanish, Portuguese, or English, in any country. Authors, editorials, or LASA members can nominate books in this category. Books should be published between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. Neither translations, re-editions, nor edited volumes will be considered. Books will be evaluated for the quality of their research, analysis, methodology, writing excellence, and their significant contribution to the field of Mexican Studies.

Best Book in the Social Sciences – Mexico Section

The Mexico Section Best Book in the Humanities is given to the best book on Mexico in the Social Sciences, published in Spanish, Portuguese, or English, in any country. Authors, editorials, or LASA members can nominate books in this category. Books should be published between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. Neither translations, re-editions, nor edited volumes will be considered. Books will be evaluated for the quality of their research, analysis, methodology, writing excellence, and their significant contribution to the field of Mexican Studies.

Best Article in the Humanities – Mexico Section


The Mexico Section Best Article in the Humanities is given to the best article on Mexico in the Humanities, published in Spanish, Portuguese, or English, in any country. Authors, editorials, or LASA members can nominate articles in this category. Articles should be published between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. The article must be within 5,000-9,000 words. Neither translations nor re-editions will be considered, but book chapters will be considered. Articles will be evaluated for the quality of their research, analysis, methodology, writing excellence, and their significant contribution to the field of Mexican Studies.

Best Article in the Social Sciences – Mexico Section


The Mexico Section Best Article in the Humanities is given to the best article on Mexico in the Social Sciences, published in Spanish, Portuguese, or English, in any country. Authors, editorials, or LASA members can nominate articles in this category. Articles should be published between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. The article must be within 5,000-9,000 words. Neither translations nor re-editions will be considered, but book chapters will be considered. Articles will be evaluated for the quality of their research, analysis, methodology, writing excellence, and their significant contribution to the field of Mexican Studies.

Best Dissertation – Mexico Section


The Mexico Section Best Dissertation is given to the best dissertation on Mexico in the Humanities or the Social Sciences, written in Spanish, Portuguese, or English, in any country. Authors, advisors, or LASA members can nominate dissertations in this category. Authors do not need to be members of LASA or of the LASA Section to compete for this category. Defenses had to have taken place before June 30, 2024. Dissertations will be evaluated for the quality of their research, analysis, methodology, writing excellence, and their significant contribution to the field of Mexican Studies.

Fill out the requested information in the next pages. Please use only the appropriate section, namely, if you compete in the category Best Book in Social Sciences, fill out only this section. You may compete in as many categories as you have different works (books and articles, or dissertation; no book chapters are invited under this call) that fit in.

Return the information as a word document or pdf to christina.karageorgou@vanderbilt.edu together with a PDF copy of your book, article or dissertation attached to the email OR provide a link through which your book, article or dissertation may be downloaded and searchable.

Deadline for submissions: October 15, 2024, 11:59pm CT

Results will be announced and awardees will be acknowledged at the next LASA Conference: Poner el cuerpo en Latinx América, 23-26 May, 2025, San Francisco, USA

Failure to document your submission appropriately will result in cancellation of the said submission.
